Fomenko Anatoly Timofeevich was born on 13 March 1945 in Donetsk. Graduated in 1967 from the Faculty of Mechanics and Mathematics (Moscow State University). Ph.D. in Mathematics and Physics (1973). Professor (1981). Head of the Department of Differential Geometry and Applications (1992) at the Faculty of Mechanics and Mathematics of Moscow State University. Member of the Russian Academy of Sciences (1994), Member of the Russian Academy of Natural Sciences (1991), Member of the International Academy of Sciences for Higher Education (1993). State Prize Laureate (1996), Moscow Mathematical Society Prize Laureate (1974), Laureate of the Prize instituted by the USSR Academy of Sciences (1987).

The field of scientific interests: variational calculus, differential geometry and topology, Lie group theory, symplectic geometry, Hamiltonian mechanics.
