TOTAL ECLIPSE EXPEDITION AUSTRALIA NOVEMBER 2012

November 14th next year, will see the most accessible Total Solar Eclipse until August 2017. We at Ulster travel are hoping that you will not want to miss this opportunity to experience it for yourself. Most of the shadow path will be over the Southern Pacific Ocean, but the moon's shadow does touch land in a largely inaccessible part of Australia's Northern Territory. It then moves across Northern Queensland to exit its only landfall to the north of Cairns. This eclipse being one of the few that crosses an international airport, will be extremely popular,and already most of the major hotels in the area are fully booked.


Those thinking of catching this eclipse should act quickly as flights, accommodation and vehicle hire are quite limited in this region. A plan to hold a marathon at the time of the eclipse around Port Douglas will put considerable pressure on all local facilities. Ulster Travel has put together this attractively priced package to get you into position to view one of nature's most magnificent spectacles. We have had the area inspected by someone who has witnessed over twenty total eclipses and used his recommendations to plan this trip. We are planning to have someone on hand to provide expert advice on how to capture the eclipse with still and video cameras.

esplanade just a few metres from your more adventurous you can rent a drive out along the centre line, or rent a car from Cairns.

Local boat owners will be offering viewing offshore followed by snorkeling on the barrier reef.

There are many accessible beach sites between Cairns and Port Douglas that could provide good viewing locations. From most of these sunrise occurs over an ocean horizon with First Contact happening about ten minutes later at 05.45 Second Contact (the start of Totality) will be around 06.38.33. Third Contact (Totality ends) at 6.40.33 ,with fourth Contact at 07.40. From Cairns, Totality will last about two minutes with a few seconds being gained by moving closer to the central line.


Some low hills behind the City will hide the actual sunrise but the view of the partially eclipsed Sun hanging above Cairns could be quite photogenic.

Even now a year in advance, it is difficult to get suitable accommodation in Cairns at a reasonable cost. Local accommodation prices for the eclipse period have jumped by 0ver 50% in the last few weeks. We have just been able to secure rooms at a fixed rate in two locations in Cairns. Typical budget Australian motel, set back from the Esplanade and a kilometre from the central business district. A family type motel with two pools and off street parking. Hotel Two Hilton Cairns A full service Hotel and part of the well known international chain situated on the Esplandade and within walking distance of the town centre. Undercover parking is available at an additional charge.


The hotel has its own restaurant, bars, pool. And small garden area.

In both hotels accommodation will be available in twin shareable rooms or in single room for an additional charge. It would be advisable to book car rental at this time. Cairns is in fact the main access point for visiting the Great Barrier Reef and there are many options available from the city. These include helicopter and seaplane visits, catamaran and sailboat trips. Snorkeling, scuba diving, semi submersible submarine and even sea bottom walking are some of the many aquatic experiences available locally. Ulster Travel will be able to help booking some of these activities in advance to avoid disappointment during the peak visitor numbers at the time of the eclipse.


When in Australia you might want to visit other places (the former Anglo Australian Telescope, Parkes Radio Telescope and Henbury Meteor Craters near Alice Springs ) and Ulster travel would be happy to assist with advice and information for a private itinerary.
