III Championship in an innovative educational project Cansat in Russia

From 1 to 6 July 2014 there were held the third championship of the “SanSat in Russia” which took place in Dubna (Moscow) – Russia’s largest center for research in nuclear physics. CanSat is a model of microsatellite weighing about 350 grams. CanSat project started in 1999. In the USA, this project led by NASA, by ESA in Europe, in Russia by SINP. Annually, this project involves about 10 thousand school and student teams around the world. In SINP there was designed Russian constructor SanSat which is significantly different from the American one.

In the final championship of the Third Cansat in Russia there were involved 21 teams – about 100 students from Yakutia, Chuvashia, Mirny (Plesetsk), Moscow, Samara, Kazan, Kaluga, Arkhangelsk and the Republic of Belarus (Minsk): 5 teams of Premier league got the right to develop a “satellite” of his own design weighing up to 1 kg (0.5 kg standard satellite).
July 5 expert commission summed up the championship.

Premier League:
1 place – “Belsat”, Lyceum of the Belarusian State University, Minsk.
2 place – “Cholbon” Physico-Technical High School, Yakutsk.
3 place – ?Galaxy?, Children and Youth Centre Space Education “Galaxy”, the city of Kaluga.
Regular season:
1 place – ?Rara avis? School ? 1155, Moscow.
2 place – “MKS17” school ?17, Moscow.
3 place – “Wings”, Children’s Creativity, Mirny (Plesetsk).

The third championship feature was launching missiles, which took place in Taldom district, Moscow region. The Russian project enthusiasts developed their own launchers of different levels, which have been tested during the World Cup 2014. In addition there were used a helicopter, an UAV, the An-2, balloons to drop a satellite.

Participants at the third championship were offered a large educational and excursion programs. Pupils listened to lectures on astrophysics, aerospace, nuclear physics, learned how the Russian team took part in the “Martian expedition” in the United States desert. The Nobel laureate George Smoot represented modern science looks at the birth and history of the universe, and the Executive Director of “Dauria Aerospace” Dr. Wei San said how to succeed business in the space. Pupils had an excursion to the Joint Institute for Nuclear Research, in the “Rainbow” design office, the famous porcelain Gardner factory in Verbilki. The Deputy Director of Personnel Development of Yandex Natalia Zverek gave a master class on public speaking and training high-quality presentations.
