2016 Destinations

Alaska
February 11-17, 2016

Aurora Borealis with Sky Photographer Dennis Mammana

Join MWT Associates, Inc. and night-sky photographer Dennis Mammana, for a Northern Lights adventure of a lifetime to Alaska. Interacting with primarily oxygen and nitrogen atoms, the solar wind excites electrons which then give off an associated glow, treasured by aurora photographers and seekers from around the world. This interaction happens in rings around EarthòÀÙs northern and southern poles, primarily around the 65 ±Ê latitudes. Fairbanks and Chena Hot Springs sit right on this line and have some of the best opportunity for aurora viewing. During the daytime hours, when the aurora is not visible, weòÀÙll explore the area and will have an opportunity to participate in winter sports and learn of the ties to the gold rush history.

The Great Java Sea Total Solar Eclipse
February 27-March 10, 2016

The Great Java Sea Total Eclipse 2016 offers diversity of astronomy, the majestic Borobudur temples and the wild nature of Borneo. BorneoòÀÙs Tanjung Puting National Park has the largest wild but gentle orangutan population with nine species of primates, three species of primates endemic to Borneo and two hundred and thirty species of birds. Belitung Island affords snorkeling or diving in the clear, turquoise Java Sea. Here in this exotic island setting is the 2016 total eclipse path and captivating crimson sunsets. Distinguished astronomical lecturers along with the naturalists will guide you through the total eclipse tour. No background in science is expected.

Pic du Midi
July 2-9, 2016

With Robert Naeye, Former Editor in Chief of Sky & Telescope and Mercury Magazine

The astronomical highlight of this exciting astronomy tour of southern France will be a trip to the Pic Du Midi Observatory (part of the Observatoire Midi-Pyrenees) in the Pyrenees Mountains (near the border with Spain). The site is famous for its history and its modern research. For example, photos taken from the observatory in 1909 discredited the òÀÜMartian canalsòÀÝ theory advocated by Percival Lowell and other astronomers. The small Saturn moon Helene was discovered at Pic Du Midi in 1980. And currently the observatory is home to at least four operating telescopes, the largest being the 2-meter Bernard Lyot Telescope. A 60-centimeter telescope is frequently used by amateur astronomers.

Stargaze the South Pacific with Dennis Mammana
November 26-December 9, 2016

Join MWT President Melita Thorpe on a stargazing cruise to the South Pacific. Noted astronomer and sky photographer, Dennis Mammana, will guide you through the night sky as you cruise from San Diego to Papeete with stops in the Marquesas Islands, French Polynesia and Society Islands. Walk in the footsteps of legendaries like Herman Melville, Paul Gauguin and Captain Cook. Bali Hai is calling you.
