An Arecibo Study of the Variability of the New H2CO Maser in IRAS 18566+0408

H2CO 6 cm maser emission is an unsolved astrophysical problem. It has b een detected toward few sources despite intense searches, and the pumping mechanism of the maser is unknown. Using Arecib o, we recently discovered a new H2CO maser emitter toward the massive star forming region IRAS 18566+0408. Based on subsequent VLA, GBT, and Arecib o observations, we detected a maser burst in the region. Here we prop ose a two-year systematic monitoring program of the H2CO maser to explore the frequency and characteristics of the bursts, and to determine when the maser may b e detectable with the VLBA to measure the maser's brightness temp erature.
