Arecibo OH Observations of Comet C/2013 US10 Catalina, December 2015-

January 2016
ABSTRACT:
Comet C/2013 US10 Catalina is a long-period comet expected to be very bright and observable at Arecibo from January 2015. Mapping the 18-cm OH lines is an effective way to measure the water production rate and outflow velocity of gas in a cometary coma. The opportunities to study comets are rare, and every comet seems to behave differently. Understanding the mechanisms that govern the sublimation on cometary nuclei requires as many observations of comets with different origins as possible to uncover trends. We have studied 26 comets in the last 15 years, but see a great deal of variation, and deviations from predicted behaviors.
