Fulbright Program in Russia:  Prospects and Problems of the Community of Scholars

Sometimes the relationship between a host institution and a Fulbright Fellow lacks depth.  Fellows are welcomed into a program but are then treated (sometimes unknowingly) like a ghost, a shadow that flits in and out of reality for some unclear, suspect purpose.  Interactions between hosts and Fulbrighters in Russia can be particularly tricky.  I have learned a great deal from my students, who are usually quite positive and interested in both learning from me and teaching me, but my communication with colleagues has been far less rewarding.  As a solution I would suggest a mentoring component in the Fulbright Program.  This could work in a variety of ways.  New Fulbright scholars, for example, could be paired with experienced Fulbright scholars during a fellowship.  This would give them an opportunity to compare notes, discuss challenges, and develop solutions to problems, especially during the first few months of an experience.  On the other hand, Fulbright scholars could instead be paired with a Russian faculty member in their department (if possible someone who understands the goals of the Fulbright program).  Mentoring relationships in either case could encourage positive communication, co-teaching efforts, research projects, and general good will.  My presentation will explore this idea.
