DAILY REPORT #1574

PERIOD COVERED: 0000Z (UTC) 02/20/96 - 0000Z (UTC) 02/21/96

Daily Status Report as of 052/0000Z

1.0 ACTIVITIES SCHEDULED AND ACCOMPLISHED:

1.1 Completed GHRS/1 6083 (The Expanding Chromosphere of a Star)

The High Resolution Spectrograph (Side One) was used to make =
Lyman-Alpha emission spectrographic observations of the A class star =
HD203280 in order to study its expanding chromosphere. The observations =
were completed as planned, and no anomalies were reported.

1.2 Completed WF/PC-2 6134 (Investigating the Nature of Circumstellar =
Matter in Young Clusters)

The WF/PC-2 was used to take broad band images of the young star =
cluster NGC-2071 associated with a bright reflection nebula in an attempt =
to detect circumstellar (CS) material about the stars in this cluster. =
The HST data will be combined with ground based near-IR and millimeter =
data. The combined data is expected to determine the frequency =
distribution of CS material and disks in undisturbed young clusters, the =
size and mass distribution of CS nebulae, and the correlation of these =
properties with stellar luminosity. The observations were completed as =
scheduled, and no problems were reported.

1.3 Completed Two Sets of WF/PC-2 6188 (WF/PC-2 Cycle 5 Calibration: =
Dark)

The WF/PC-2 was used to make internal dark calibration images. The =
observations were completed as scheduled, and no problems were reported.

1.4 Completed FGS 6326 (Monitor the Long Term Stability of FGS#3 - =
Early 1996)

FGS#3 was used to make astrometric observations of star OF956 and =
other nearby standard stars which are located in the M-35 open star =
cluster in order to test the long-term stability of the FGS unit. The =
observations were completed as planned, and no problems were reported.

1.5 Completed WF/PC-2 5972 (Determination of the Extragalactic Distance =
Scale)

The WF/PC-2 was used to make observations of the galaxy NGC-2090 =
looking for standard candle Cepheid variable stars. The purpose of these =
observations is to help estimate the Hubble constant with an accuracy of =
10%. The observations were executed as scheduled, and no anomalies were =
noted.

1.6 Completed FGS 6258 (Is the Chiron Occultation Star, CH02, a =
Double?)

The FGSs were used to make astrometric observations of the star =
CH02 to determine if this star is a double star. The star CH02 was =
occulted by the deep-solar system object Chiron in 1993. The light from =
the star did not disappear completely during the occultation, so it is =
possible that the star is a close binary. The observations were executed =
as s scheduled, and no anomalies were noted.

1.7 Completed WF/P-2 6254 (GTO Pure Parallel Program - Cycle 5)

The WF/PC-2 was use to make random long exposures of high galactic =
fields taken in parallel with the prime science observations to obtain a =
random sample of galaxies. The observations were executed as scheduled, =
and no anomalies were noted.

1.8 Completed WF/PC-2 6250 (WF/PC-2 Cycle 5 Calibration: Internal =
Monitor)

The WF/PC-2 was used to make a series on internal calibration =
observations. Internal flats, biases, and K-Spot calibration images were =
taken. These observations are designed to monitor the health of the =
cameras. The observations were executed as scheduled, and no anomalies =
were noted.

1.9 Completed FOS/RD 5852 (Lyman-alpha Forest Cloud Sizes and =
Clustering at Z~0.5)

The Faint Object Spectrograph (Red Side) was used to make =
spectrographic observations of QSO MC1146+111 to study its Lyman-Alpha =
forest and its relation to other nearby QSOs. The observations were =
executed as scheduled, and no anomalies were noted.

1.10 Completed WF/PC-2 6095 (Hot Stellar Populations in Globular =
Cluster Cores)

The WF/PC-2 was used to make observations of globular cluster =
NGC-6652 to study the radial gradients of the hot stellar population in =
its core region. Observations were made in the blue, violet and far =
ultraviolet. The observations were completed as planned, and no problems =
were reported.

1.11 Completed FOS/RD/BL 6108 (A Critical Test Case)

The Faint Object Spectrograph (Both Red and Blue Sides) were used =
to study the UV absorption lines in the Seyfert galaxy NGC-5316. These =
lines are thought to arise from gas located close to the central engine. =
The UV spectrum of the target is highly variable; the fluxes also have =
varied by a factor of four. The observations were executed as scheduled, =
and no anomalies were noted.
