DAILY REPORT #1836

PERIOD COVERED: 0000Z (UTC) 03/17/97 - 0000Z (UTC) 03/18/97

Daily Status Report as of 077/0000Z

1.0 ACTIVITIES SCHEDULED AND ACCOMPLISHED:

1.1 Completed Three Sets of WF/PC-2 6904 (WF/PC-2 Cycle 6 Cal.:Darks)

The WF/PC-2 was used to make a series of several dark calibration =
images as part of a standard calibration within Cycle 6. This =
calibration procedure is performed once per week as part of an on-going =
CCD calibration to be used to monitor and characterize hot pixels. The =
observations were executed as scheduled, and no anomalies were noted.

1.2 Completed FGS 7026 (Fold Flat 3 (FF3) Position Optimization for =
FGS-1R)

The FGSs were used to make FF3 C FGS-1R S-curves which will be =
optimized to achieve a modulation within 10 per-cent of the maximum =
accepted value at a particular field location and to produce an =
acceptable set of S-curves over the entire FGS field of view. The =
observations were completed as planned and no problems were reported.

1.3 Completed STIS/CCD 7092 (CCD Dark Rate and Read Noise)

Observations were taken to measure CCD dark current and gather =
data for making super darks. A bias calibration observation was also =
taken. The observations were completed as planned, and no anomalies were =
reported.

1.4 Completed WF/PC-2 6837 (The Ultraviolet Properties of "Dwarf" =
Seyfert 1 Nuclei)

The WF/PC-2 was used to make ultraviolet observations of the =
"dwarf", type one, Seyfert galaxy NGC-2655. This class of "dwarf" =
Seyfert populate the faint end of the local AGN luminosity function and =
hold important clues to the evolution of the entire AGN population. The =
observations were completed as scheduled, and no problems were reported.

1.5 Completed STIS/CCD 7077 (Spectroscopic Mode Image Quality for the =
CCD - STIS18C)

The Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph/CCD was used to examine =
the image quality across the entire detector for the primary =
spectroscopic modes and establish whether changes occurred during launch. =
The observations were executed as scheduled, and no anomalies were =
noted.

1.6 Completed WF/PC-2 6346 (Snapshot Survey of the Ultraluminous IRAS =
Galaxy Sample-Part 1 High)

The WF/PC-2 was used to make snapshot survey observations of the =
ultraluminous IRAS galaxy IR12112+03. These data will be searched for =
multiple cores, which imply a merger has occurred, and for starburst =
regions. The observations were executed as scheduled, and no anomalies =
were noted.

1.7 Completed WF/PC-2 6361 (High Resolution Imaging of X-Ray Selected =
AGNs)

The WF/PC-2 was used to make high resolution observations of the =
known low, red-shifted x-ray, active galactic nucleus (AGN) MS1403.5+5. =
These data will allow a study of the optical properties of an unbiased =
sample of AGN host galaxies. The observations were completed as =
scheduled, and no problems were reported.

1.8 Completed WF/PC-2 6583 (The Origin of the Alignment Effect: =
WF/PC-2 Imaging Polarimetry of High Redshift Radio Galaxies)

The WF/PC-2 was used to make imaging polarimetry observations of =
the high redshifted galaxy 3C266. These polarimetric observations are =
crucial to the understanding of the spectacular morphologies recently =
discovered in high redshift radio galaxies by HST, and to the =
investigation of morphological and evolutionary links between radio =
galaxies and quasars. The observation were completed as scheduled, and =
no anomalies were reported.

1.9 Completed STIS/CCD 7099 (CCD Flat-Field Stability and Cosmetic =
Defect Fraction)

These observations were used to verify cosmetic defect fraction on =
the CCD using flat-field images, and to investigate flat-field stability =
over short (minutes) and
long (days) time intervals. The observations were executed as scheduled, =
and no anomalies were noted.

1.10 Completed Two Sets of WF/PC-2 6363 (The Environments and Host =
Galaxies of BL-Lac Objects)

The WF/PC-2 was used to make snapshot survey observations of BL-Lac=
object S4-0954+65 in order to study its environment and its host =
galaxies. The goal is to investigate systematic trends in host galaxy =
type, unusual morphological features, nearby companion galaxies, etc. =
The observations were executed as scheduled, and no anomalies were noted.

1.11 Completed WF/PC-2 6352 (Dwarf Elliptical Galaxy Snapshots)

The WF/PC-2 was used to survey VCC2029, from a sample of 30 dwarf =
elliptical galaxies. The observations were completed as planned, and no =
anomalies were reported.

1.12 Completed WF/PC-2 6720 (The Evolution of Radio-Loud Quasars II)

The WF/PC-2 was used to make observations of the radio-loud quasar =
MRC2024-21 as part of a mini-survey to study its evolution and =
morphology. The observations were executed as scheduled, and no =
anomalies were noted.
