All we have available to us is Observation.

From those observations we try to put grand ideas together about the nature of the Universe.

In some sense this an absurd notion for what are we but perhaps:

Evolved pieces of Ectoplasm peering into the vast Darkness through pieces of polished glass, hoping to discern the grand Architecture of the Universe.
