I just finished testing the Dedicated DOS/Windows mode of the Merlin beta.
While it took a few tries to make it work, I am very impressed. Now that it
is working, I can set up an icon for any game that would not normally run
under Warp. It is a simple matter of checking a box on the notebook page
where you normally set DOS or Windows or OS/2 as the program type. When I
start a program that is marked as Dedicated, it only takes about 15 seconds
for OS/2 to suspend itself. When I exit the game or program, it only takes
about 10 seconds for OS/2 to return back to the exact state it was in before I
started the program!

My configuration utilizes Boot Manager to boot off of my C: or D: partition.
The C: partition has a dual-boot configuration for PC-DOS 7.0/Windows 3.1 and
OS/2 4.0 (Merlin) beta. The D: partition has Warp 3.0. To make the Dedicated
DOS/Windows support work, I had to disable my Boot Manager (and thus, lose
access to Warp 3.0). When it was enabled, it tried to load Warp 3.0 after
returning from a Dedicated DOS/Windows session started from Warp 4.0!
Luckily, it is a simple matter to re-enable Boot Manager if I need it.

When I rebooted back to 4.0 manually, it still acted as if it was reloading
from having run the Dedicated program. This made the boot time 10 seconds! I
wish IBM would implement this "hibernation" mode as a standard shutdown
option.

To summarize, you must use a pure dual-boot configuration (along with the
other requirement of a FAT boot partition on an IDE drive) for this to work.
I plan to report the Boot Manager incompatibility as a bug to IBM. Hopefully
they will resolve that before GA. Even if they don't, I will be very happy
with this new feature. It will save a lot of time and a lot of complaints of
incompatibilities with games.

P.S. This message was dictated using VoiceType technology in OS/2 4.0 beta.
It was about 85% accurate on this message (I'm still getting used to it).
