Homework 12 (Upper Limits) You observe 19 counts in a source region. You have also observed 100 counts in a background region that is 10 times the area of the source region. 1. Is a source detected? 2. Use two different ways to set the detection threshold: first, using only the nominal distribution of the background counts, and second, using a S/N measure. 3. Use any threshold level to decide on the detection that you like, but describe how you chose it. 4. Compute upper limits for both cases (do not forget to include the effect of the background), for =0.5 and =0.99 . 5. Are the computed upper limits consistent with the measured source intensities?
