See latest image of Sun taken with SDO/AIA using helioviewer HEK lists events and regions of interest on the Sun. Contains an events registry as well as a field-of-view coverage registry. Look at specific items using isolsearch, e.g., find a flare, look at its movie, download the data for detailed analysis.

Flares on EV Lac Huenemoerder et al. 2010, ApJ, 723, 1558

Astro 193 : 2015-jan-26 : VLK

EV Lac is a nearby low mass flare star. Two ~100 ksec observations with Chandra ACIS-S/HETG were analyzed by Huenemoerder et al. Lots of flares were identified, and they were fit using Weibull curves to determine flare characteristics.

Chandra is one of NASA's Great Observatories (Spitzer, Hubble, and Compton are others). It is an X-ray telescope. Focusing occurs by photons doing total external reflection via nested parabolic and hyperbolic mirror surfaces. (draw)

Potential Projects

· Compute abundances and Emission Measure distribution for a stellar X-ray source · Find and analyze stellar flares from Kepler or solar flares from SDO/AIA · Analyze solar activity proxies for past 3 cycles · Analyze population of objects from some specific observation or campaign

Not meant to be a list to choose from, but use merely as guidance for "complexity level". Consult instructors if in doubt. OK to use published data, but should not simply duplicate published analysis, should point out ways original analysis could be improved, must do something new using the data OK to "intern" with other people at CfA -- go and talk to them and ask for analysis/stats heavy projects that can be done in 2-3 weeks over 2 months
