From: TerryMosel@aol.com Date: Wed, 23 Jul 2003 19:13:51 EDT Subject: Major events Hi all, Some events of note! 1. Prof Bill Napier (Armagh & Cardiff) asked me to pass this on: "Hi Terry, - On Monday coming (28th July) at 11 a.m. Margaret and Geoff Burbidge will be at the [Armagh] Observatory and Margaret will be giving a talk on "Quasars". The Burbidges are world-class astronomers (with Hoyle and Fowler, they co-authored one of the seminal scientific papers of the 20th century, on the synthesis of elements in stars, which led directly to a Nobel Prize for one of their group). They've pioneered the study of quasars and are still highly active in the field. They both believe there are phenomena connected with quasars which can't be understood in conventional terms and which point to the operation of "new physics" -- another Nobel Prize in the making, if they prove to be right. Margaret is an observational astronomer and I expect her talk will be concerned with these unexplained aspects of the quasar phenomenon. Geoff is a former director of Kitt Peak Observatory, Margaret of the Royal Greenwich Observatory. Given the above, I felt that some of the amateurs might be interested to hear Margaret Burbidge's talk, and Mark agrees. Can you spread the word of the forthcoming talk to the mad fanatics who seem to congregate around you? Best regards, Bill" [At least he was diplomatic enough to refer to you lot as the mad fanatics, not me.... I would suggest you contact the Observatory if you intend to go, so they know the numbers to expect. There is only limited space, so there's no guarantee that you can get in unless you 'book a place'. Terry] 2. Prof Mark Bailey (Armagh) asked me to pass on these details: A. The Royal Irish Academy (RIA) McCrea Lecture will be given by Wendy Freedman, Director of the Carnegie Observatories, on Monday 15 and Tuesday 16 September; 15 September in Academy House, Dublin, and 16 September in Queen's University Belfast. Title to be confirmed. Please put it in your diaries and mention it to anyone that you think might be interested. The RIA will send out promotional material late August/early September. Contact details as follows: Ruth Hegarty Royal Irish Academy / Acadamh RМoga na hиireann 19 Dawson Street, Dublin 2, Ireland. The local organizer is Creidhe O'Sullivan: CrИidhe O'Sullivan | e-mail: creidhe.osullivan@may.ie Dept. of Physics | Tel: +353-1-7083953 NUI Maynooth | Fax: +353-1-7083313 Maynooth, Co. Kildare | http://www.may.ie/academic/physics/ Ireland N.B. The ASGI meeting is a Professional-level meeting, with very technical papers, so is not suitable for your average amateur! But the Irish Astronomical Association is a member of ASGI, so any of our members are entitled to attend. You should let CrИidhe O'Sullivan know if you intend to go, so that they know how many to expect. Clear Skies, Terry Moseley
