From: TerryMoselaol.com Date: Thu, 29 Jul 2004 17:37:16 EDT Subject: SUN-DAY on SATURDAY Hi all, Remember the Irish Astronomical Association Solar Day - "SUNSPOTS & SUNDIALS" at Carnfunnock Carnfunnock Country Park, A2, just North of Larne, Co. Antrim on Saturday 31 July. Also a display, talks, etc, so come along even if it's cloudy. This will start at 2 p.m., and go on to about 4.30. There will be telescopic views of the SUN, if the sky is clear, using specialised safe equipment. See our life-giving star in incredible detail, even over a distance of 94 million miles! See the huge prominences - gigantic loops of flaming hydrogen, some tens of thousands of miles long, or even bigger! See fascinating Solar Flares & Sun-Spots, associated with magnetic storms on Earth, some of which produce the beautiful and fascinating Aurorae, or Northern Lights. Learn how the Sun makes life on Earth possible, and how a 'GreenHouse' effect could seriously damage our climate. Find out how the Sun shines, how big it is*, how it formed, how old it is, how long it will last, and how it will die! Join our guided tour of the Park's amazing collection of sundials and see how they work, and how they differ. SAFETY NOTE. NEVER try to look at the Sun yourself with any sort of optical equipment such as binoculars or a telescope - instant blindness could be the result! We hope that 'Ulsternaut' Derek Heatly will be there with his amazing collection of space memorabilia, meteorites, pieces of Mars etc. Admission: There is no extra charge, just the normal admission charge for Carnfunnock, but members bringing telescopes will get in free. Refreshments will be available. All will be very welcome. Clear Skies, Terry Moseley
