From: TerryMoselaol.com Date: Sat, 16 Apr 2005 09:16:07 EDT Subject: IAA Event, NS appeal, HST Event, SAN Magazine, ASGI Hi all, 1. No luck with the sky at Castle Espie last night, in spite of a good weather forecast! But we had an excellent attendance, and all were happy with the alternative entertainment in the shape of Robert Hill's superb presentations in the Stardome, and talks & video & powerpoint from Derek Heatly & Andy McCrea 2. We'll hope for better luck with the same event again at Carnfunnock Country Park, N of Larne, tonight (Sat). 3. MAJOR HST ANNIVERSARY EVENT: To mark the 15th anniversary of the Hubble Space Telescope, Armagh Planetarium is running a Special HST & Faulkes Telescope Event at the Ulster Museum, Belfast, on Sunday 24 April (as the Planetarium is closed for refurbishment at the moment). They will be 'unveiling' two special new anniversary images. This is a joint event between the Planetarium, the Ulster Museum, the Faulkes Telescope Project (see below), and the Hubble European Space Agency Information Centre in Munich. The event begins at 1 p.m., and there will be live presentations at 2.30, 3.30, and 4 p.m. on the discoveries of the HST. In addition, there will be a live link-up with the 2m robotic Faulkes Telescope in Hawaii! Weather permitting, attendees will be able take their own images of celestial objects with one of the largest telescopes in the world devoted to education (and a pretty big telescope by most standards anyway!) They also hope to have samples of the Hubble Anniversary DVD to give away on the day. Thanks and congratulations to Robert & Armagh Planetarium for arranging this superb event! Not to be missed! 4. The following from New Scientist might be of interest: no more details yet: 5. More details are now available of the new BBC "Sky At Night" astronomy magazine, to be published on 24th May. It will have 108pp per issue, including covers, with a free CD-ROM and an 8-page pull-out observing guide in each issue. It will be on sale through the UK in most newsagents, and in Ireland from Easons, and will also be available by subscription, at a considerable saving. The website at www.skyatnightmagazine.com gives further details and has subs info etc. I have been invited to join the Editorial Board, and have of couse accepted. In spite of that it should be worth trying, perhaps more because a certain Sir Martin Rees, Astronomer Royal, and Garry Hunt, author & space expert, among others, are also on the Editorial Board! Sir Patrick Moore will of course be a major contributor to each issue, with the main editorial team comprising Graham Southorn, Paul Parsons, Chris Lintott (now effectively deputy presenter on Sky at Night), Adrian Ashford (ex Sky & Telescope) 6. The spring ASGI meeting will be held in NUIG on 21 & 22 April: details at: http://www.arm.ac.uk/asgi/Spring2005/index_asgi.htm N.B.: This is a professional level event, but if you are a member of a Club or Society affiliated to ASGI, such as the IAA, you are entitled to attend. But make sure your maths & physics neurons are in good working order! Clear Skies, Terry Moseley
