IRISH SCIENCE BOOK: A new book by the well-known Science Editor of the Irish Times, Dick Ahlstrom, will be launched at the RIA in Dublin on 17 March: it's called 'Flashes of Brilliance - The cutting edge of Irish science' This is the first book to highlight science research in Ireland and features 75 of the men and women whose work is transforming the world of science in Ireland today. Prof Sir Martin Rees, Astronomer Royal, writes: "Dick Ahlstrom has a wonderful knack of making science clear and fascinating. It is excellent to see this collection of articles showcasing scientific life in Ireland." The book collects articles from the 'Science Today' page of the "Irish Times". IAA Public Lecture, by Dr Miruna Popescu: Wed 22 March, 7.30 p.m., Stranmillis College, as already notified. 3. IAA at Carnfunnock. The next IAA public observing event will be at Carnfunnock Country Park, near Larne, on Friday 7 April, at 8 p.m. We'll have the usual selection of telescopes and binoculars, plus lots of inside attractions, including our own Derek Heatly, just in case it's cloudy. (The way NASA keep delaying the next Shuttle Launch, he might well be in space before it!). More deatails later. 4. Professor David Southwood (Director of Science, European Space Agency) is to give a talk in Armagh on Friday 5th May, in the Rotunda Lecture Theatre, St Patrick's Trian, Armagh, at 20:00, followed at 21:15 by tea and tray bakes.
