Hi all,

1. IAA Solar Day, Carnfunnock Country Park.  The next in the
IAA's series of 'Solar days' will be held at Carnfunnock Country
Park, Drains Bay, Larne (on the A2 Coast Road, North out of Larne), on
Saturday 28 July, from 2.0. pm. to 5 p.m. There will be the usual
selection of special telescopes for solar viewing, including H-alpha
views, which are always spectacular. Has the Sun passed Solar Minimum
yet? Will there be any spots of the new cycle visible?    Other
attractions will be available too, including our intrepid Ulsternaut,
Derek Heatly, in case of bad weather. If you have any sort of telescope
capable of showing the Sun safely, bring it along. IAA members bringing
telescopes or otherwise assisting at the event get in free. All are
welcome. 

2. The International Space Science Institute (ISSI) of Bern has opened a
post doc position for a scientist active in the space science areas.
Attached please find the announcement for your own information and for
possible further distribution to any individual that you may consider as
suitable candidate. More information on ISSI can be found on

3. Summer Evening Tours of the Armagh Observatory Grounds, Astropark and
Human Orrery Dr Miruna Popescu and Armagh Observatory PhD students and
others are providing, on an experimental basis, a programme of four
evening guided tours of the Observatory Grounds and Astropark during
July and  August 2007.  The first events took place on the evenings of
Tuesday 10th July & Tuesday 24th July; the other three events will take
place on Tuesday 14th August and Tuesday 28th August.  Those who wish
to  participate in these tours should meet Miruna and the other
Tour Guides at the main Armstrong School entrance to the
Observatory Drive, beside the Courthouse, shortly before 7.00 pm when
the Tour begins.      Car parking is available outside the Observatory
main building on in the car park halfway up the Observatory Drive.  The
Tours on Tuesday 24th July and Tuesday 28th August will include
an illustrated public talk on the Sun, given in the Observatory
Library, by Miruna Popescu, as well as a general question-and-answer
session on astronomy.    These events are held as part of the summer
programme in conjunction with other members of the Armagh Visitor
Education Committee (AVEC), and as part of the Observatory s
contribution to the International  Heliophysical Year 2007/2008
(IHY2007/2008).

4. European Heritage Open Day (EHOD), Saturday 8th September. 

Armagh Observatory is again providing an exhibition and free
public tours as part of the DoE Environment and Heritage Service
EHOD programme, on Saturday 8th September.  The Librarian, Mr John
McFarland, is arranging an exhibition on astronomy in the
Observatory Boardroom, and public tours will be provided at: 11:00,
12:00, 14:00, 15:00 and 16:00. 

5. Seminar at TCD, 27 July: Title:
"Current problems in massive star evolution: mass-loss, mixing, magnetic
fields and metallicity." Speaker: Dr. Danny Lennon, Isaac Newton Group
of Telescopes (ING), Canary Islands, Spain. Date: Friday, 27 July 2007
at 12.00 noon, Location: Schrödinger Lecture Theatre, TCD


6. An Evening With Al Bean. Ken Willoughby of WYAS has asked me to let
you know about an event being held on 11 October in Pontefract, Yorks,
with special guest Al Bean, of Apollo 12, 4th man to walk on the Moon.
