IAA PUBLIC LECTURE: The next IAA public lecture will be on Wednesday 7 March, when Dr David Asher of Armagh Observatory will give a talk entitled "Meteor Showers: their evolution & interaction with Earth". Dr Asher is a world-renowned authority on the evolution of meteor streams, having correctly predicted all the major Leonid meteor storm outbursts over almost the past decade. It will be held as usual in Lecture Theatre 5, Stranmillis College, Stranmillis Road, Belfast. Admission is free, including light refreshments. All are welcome. 2. Colloquium. The second of the DCU astrophysics colloquia takes place this Thursday, 8th of March, details as below: Title: The Solar Dynamo Speaker: Professor David Hughes, University of Leeds, UK. Location: S209, Research & Engineering Building, DCU, Dublin Time: 15:00 Professor Hughes is an expert in dynamo theory, MHD turbulence, and hydrodynamic and MHD instabilities. He is also associate editor of the Journal of Fluid Mechanics and a member of the advisory board of Theoretical and Computational Fluid Dynamics. Tea & coffee will follow the talk. All are welcome to attend. 3. COSMOS: A final reminder re Cosmos 2007: This weekend sees the 17th Annual Springtime Irish Star Party, Cosmos, take place. The 3 day event takes place in Annaharvey Equestrian Farm, Tullamore, Co Offaly. It is 3 miles out the R420 Portarlington Road. The line-up is as follows: Seanie Morris, well-known amateur astronomer, from Tullamore Astronomical Society "Cosmic Dust: Is that all we are?" Tony O'Hanlon, long-time amateur astronomer, from Shannonside Astronomy Club "Carbon Stars: Cool Stellar Dudes" Tom Bonner, another long-time amateur astronomer, from Cork Astronomy Club "From Under the Shadow of Newton" Sean McKenna, long-time member, and co-founder, of Tullamore Astronomical Society "Amateur Radio Astronomy" Dave Grennan, avid astrophotographer, from Astronomy Ireland and South Dublin Astronomical Society Title TBA Prof. Niall ÓMurchadha, Dept. of Physics, University College Cork Gravitational Waves (formal title TBA) Deirdre Kelleghan, Irish Astronomical Society "Sketching from the Eyepiece" The weekend includes exhibits and displays, astro buy and sell, raffle, Cosmic Dinner (Saturday night), free Table Quiz, and lots of informal, friendly fun.
