Subject: Death and funeral of Colm Cannon; Brendan McWilliams

Hi all,
  1. My sincere apologies for not getting this out sooner, but a
combination of IT problems, personal circumstances, and the sudden major
comet outburst prevented me from doing so until now.

I was very sad to learn of the sudden death of Colm Cannon on Monday, at
the untimely early age of 38. I knew him for many years, and always
found him a very friendly and really enthusiastic amateur astronomer and
space enthusiast. He served on the Council of the IAS, and then was the
Space Correspondent for AI.

AI gives the following information:

"Funeral arrangements have now been finalised and are as follows:

Removal to the Church of St. Peter and St. Paul, Dunboyne this
(Wednesday) evening, arriving at 7.00pm. Funeral tomorrow (Thursday)
after 11.00am Mass to Rooske Cemetery, Dunboyne, Co. Meath. The official
announcement can be read at this link.

An online Book of Condolences has been opened at
www.astronomy.ie. Your condolences will be printed,
bound and given to Colm's family."

I'm sure that all who knew him will join in sending sincere sympathy and
condolences to his family, friends, and colleagues.

2. It was also a shock to learn of the death on the same day of Brendan
McWilliams, meteorologist sans pareil, and columnist on the Irish Times.
He occasionally covered astronomical items, and quoted me on several
occasions. We corresponded by email, but I really regret that I never
met him before he died.

Two lives cut short far too soon, but each had already given a lot to us
all in their own way.
