Abstract

Conclusion

During the course of this report many key points have come to light, in particular the wastefulness of overlighting. Over ё60 million are wasted every year on streetlighting in the UK, ignoring the vast sums also being wasted on spotlighting, floodlighting, security lighting and the lighting of signs. The idea that more lighting means better lighting is not only wasting money, but also the lives of animals, such as the 50,000 birds that died over 2 nights at Warner Robins Air Force Base.

Another key point is how easy it is to obtain good quality fittings which reduce, if not eliminate, light pollution. There is also a wide range of different bulbs that can be used, all cheaper and more efficient than the kind everyone is used to: incandescent bulbs. It is surprising how widely these are used, considering the fact that they have efficacies of only, at times, 2.5%.
