Using the Orrery

Task 1: Observing the planets

Look at the shape of the orbits. They come in two main types, those that
are nearly circular and those that are clearly elliptical. In an elliptical
orbit the distance from the sun changes with its position around the orbit.

List the planets that have obvious elliptical orbits and those that have
roughly circular orbits.

|Elliptical |Circular |

Look at the values or "r" if these are the same then it is a circular
orbit. Now look at your answers above. Where they correct?

Look at the distances between the discs. The best ones are Halley, Encke
(both comets) and Mercury. The discs are equally timed at 16 days per step
(so Jupiter has 10 steps between the discs and is 160 days apart). Mercury
is timed at 8 day steps with the 11 tiles making up two full orbits.

Task 2: Calculating the speed of the planets in their orbits
What happens to the speed of these celestial bodies? Measure the distance
between the discs with a ruler, this will give you a crude measurement of
speed (on this scale 1cm = 1.5 million km).

Name of object............ Name of object..............

|Disc |Distance|Distance |

What do you notice? Where are the planets moving the quickest, where are
they moving the slowest?
