Rockets only have a finite amount of energy to use in propelling spacecraft to the planets. Effectively one has to stay within a velocity contour (see figure), the bigger the contour the larger the available energy budget. A given energy budget translates into a corresponding "launch window" (Y-axis) and "arrival window" (X-axis).
