About thešSchool

ThešSchool ofšPhysics has ašglorious history comprising 200 years ofšfruitful work inšeducation, science, and culture. When onšJanuaryš17, 1805 Kharkiv Imperial University was opened, one ofšits departments ofšthešDivision ofšPhysical and Mathematical Sciences was thešDepartment ofšTheoretical and Experimental Physics. A.šStoikovych, ašSerbian byšorigin, was thešfirst tošhead this Department. Hešwas ašbrilliant lecturer. One ofšhis students was V.šKomlyshynskyi who would later head thešSchool ofšPhysics inš1813. Hešwas thešfirst tošdefend his PhD thesis inšphysics atšthešUniversity, and tošengage inšeducational and enlightening activities for about 35šyears. Inš1808 Kharkiv University opened thešCabinet ofšAstronomy, inš1824š? thešDepartment ofšAstronomy. Inš1983 Professor G. Levitsky founded thešAstronomy Observatory.

ThešSchool ofšPhysics has founded world-known scientific schools that are still successfully developing:

  • Theoretical Physics,
  • Solid State Physics,
  • Low Temperature Physics,
  • Magnetism,
  • Real Crystal Physics,
  • Physical Optics,
  • Solar System Physics.

For example, thešfounders ofšthešscientific school ofštheoretical physics atšKharkiv University were prominent scientists, namely Lev Landau, ašlaureate ofšthešNobel and Lenin Prizes, and Ilya Lifshits, ašlaureate ofšLenin Prize.

Today, there are nine Departments providing students? training:

  • Department ofšExperimental Physics,
  • Department ofšHigher Mathematics,
  • Department ofšGeneral Physics,
  • Academician I. Lifshitz Department ofšTheoretical Physics,
  • Department ofšLow Temperature Physics,
  • Department ofšSolid State Physics,
  • Department ofšCrystal Physics,
  • Department ofšPhysical Optics,
  • Department ofšAstronomy and Space Informatics.

ThešDepartments have branches atšthešinstitutes ofšthešNational Academy ofšSciences ofšKharkiv. Our partners are B.šI.šVerkin Institute for Low Temperature Physics and Engineering, thešNational Research Center Kharkiv Institute ofšPhysics and Technology, thešInstitute ofšElectrophysics, thešScience and Engineering Complex Institute ofšMonocrystals, V.šYa. Usykov Institute ofšRadiophysics and Electronics, and thešInstitute for Radioastronomy. Close cooperation with thešInstitute ofšthešScintillation Materials ofšthešNational Academy ofšSciences ofšUkraine resulted inšthešopening ofšthešspecialization ?Physics ofšNanocrystals and Nanostructures? onšthešbasis ofšthešscientific school ofšreal crystal physics (Department ofšCrystal Physics), thešcreation ofšthešScientific and Educational Center Functional Materials whose scientists won theštender for realization ofšthešProject ?Development ofšNew Composite Media tošRecord Ionizing Emission Using Nanodisperse Materials?.

ThešSchool also has research and methodological laboratories, ašunique helium liquefaction station, and machine workshops.

Today?s School has ašpowerful potential: students? professional training isšensured byšfaculty members from its nine departments. Among them there are two full members and two corresponding members ofšthešNational Academy ofšSciences ofšUkraine, ašcorresponding member ofšthešTransport Academy ofšSciences ofšUkraine, laureates ofšthešState Prize ofšUkraine inšScience and Engineering, Merited Workers ofšEducation ofšUkraine, more than 30šdoctors ofšsciences, full professors, and more than 40šPhDs, associate professors.

ThešSchool ofšPhysics trains specialists inšBachelor?s degree programs (majors: Physics, Astronomy) with thešterm ofštraining being four years, and inšMaster?s degree programs (specialities: Physics, Condensed State Physics, Astronomy) with thešterm ofštraining being one year. Our graduates obtain thešqualification ofšresearcher (physics and astronomy), that ofšlecturer/instructor ofšašuniversity and higher educational institutions. Students ofšthešSchool ofšPhysics can choose tošobtain anšadditional qualification ofšteacher ofšphysics and mathematics. Graduates ofšthešSchool ofšPhysics fruitfully work inšcontemporary areas ofšphysics, including physics ofšbiomaterials and medical material science, astrophysics and astronomy, inšthešfields ofšfinancial mathematics, computer simulation, and IT-technologies.

Research development contributed tošthešopening ofšnew specialities and specializations:

  • Physics speciality, specializations: physics ofšmagnetic phenomena, magnetism ofšnanodimensional systems, optics and spectroscopy, nonlinear optics ofšnanodimensional structures, photonics and optoinformatics, physics ofšcrystals and functional materials, physics ofšnanocrystals and nanosystems, low temperature physics, superconductivity physics, theoretical physics;
  • Condensed-State Physics speciality, specializations: physical material science and computer metallography, physics ofšbiomaterials and medical material science;
  • Astronomy speciality, specializations: astrophysics, Solar System physics, and space informatics.

ThešDepartment ofšHigher Mathematics isšplanning tošopen thešspeciality inšcomputer simulation ofšphysical processes.

Students ofšthešDepartment ofšPhysics undergo scientific internships atšthešCenter for Nanointegration and Biomaterials (CeNIDE) atšthešUniversity ofšDuisburg?Essen (Germany) and atšPavol Jozef ?af?rik University inšKo?ice (Slovakia). This enables them tošget acquainted with thešorganization ofštraining, content ofšthešrelated academic courses and principles ofšknowledge contraol adopted atšthese institutions, toševaluate thešefficiency ofšpresenting thešacademic materials through contemporary forms ofšself-study and using electronic technologies. Students share thešexperience gained atšthešSchool?s seminars and workshops. All this encourages students? involvement and enhances their role inšshaping thešcontent ofšeducation. Asšašrule, students take active part inšregional, all-Ukrainian and international science conferences where they make reports onšthešresults ofštheir own research.

During their studies students ofšthešSchool ofšPhysics not only receive ordinary scholarships and exhibitions, but also have anšopportunity tošapply for thešPresident?s Scholarship, scholarships ofšdifferent charitable foundations, inšparticular those ofšU.šSapronov and I.šTarapov Foundations, asšwell asšnamed scholarships, such asšI.šM.šLifshitz Scholarship, M.šP.šBarabashov Scholarship. Within thešframework ofšcooperation with thešUniversities inšDuisburg-Essen and Bochum (Germany) our students receive Leonard Euler Scholarships (German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD)). Thešhigh quality ofšstudents? training atšthešSchool ofšPhysics isšreflected inštheir victories atšprestigious contests inšphysics, astronomy, astrophysics, and theoretical mechanics, inšsuccessful performances atšcontests ofšstudents? scientific works, and thešstudent tournament ofšphysicists. Inš2013thešSciVerse Scopus scientometric database published thešranking ofšyoung scientists ofšUkraine where thešgraduates ofšthešSchool ofšPhysics are among thešTOP-50.

ThešSchool has close ties with ašnumber ofšscientific and educational institutions offering employment for our alumni.
