The Transit of Venus is 2012's big event and people will want to get in on the action. It's a chance to get people hooked on astronomy. A telescope is like the wardrobe in the Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe. In the story, the children slip into a magical world through the wardrobe. The ToV can be the enticement into views of the Sun, and once people have fallen into the world of the Sun, via the telescope, they won't want to come back. You have the power of opening up another world to the public! We've got some down-toearth solutions to help support your solar outreach, so that the lines are manageable and there's plenty for people to do when they're not looking through the telescope. While you're busy at the telescope, another member or two can chat with the solar observers. Here's a snapshot of some of the features of the ToolKit and how it can add pep to an already fabulous experience.

Power Up Your Outreach with Our Magnetic Sun ToolKit

Sun Science in PowerPoint

If you're doing an indoor activity, or your ToV event gets rained out, don't worry, we've got you covered with a PowerPoint presentation with lots of fun science about the Sun. This makes a great Plan B for a rainy day.

Sun Cards There's a great assortment of waterproof cards that fall into roughly three interchangeable categories. They help you:
Answer questions

One of the most common questions will be, "Is it safe to look at the Sun (through a scope)?" Part of your outreach is informing the public on how to look at the Sun. We have a card that you can place on a clipboard so that people can find out how to view the Sun safely.

about sunspots, what they are and how they form. Reading through the cards with the people in the line can help them get ready for a better telescope viewing session.

Lots of times, people don't remember or realize the daily impact of the Sun. We've included cards to make information digestible and relevant to people. We've got a card about sunscreen and UV rays, cards

Using compasses and magnets, make the connection between Earth's magnetic field, aurorae, and the Sun's magnetic activity with an interactive demonstration. Sounds like a great ToolKit, right? If you're already a Night Sky Network Club, just make sure you log your events to be eligible for the ToolKit. If you're not part of the Network, we'd love to have you join this amazing group of over 350 clubs across the U.S. Join at www.nightskynetwork.org. As part of Night Sky Network outreach, your club events are publicized on the free iPhone app, Go StarGaze. In addition, for ToV, club events will be listed on the NASA Sun-Earth Day website. Keep the love of astronomy going! Don't let your audience walk away without telling them about our Facebook and Twitter accounts, where they can get daily sky updates.
