2006 SPRING FUND DRIVE

Get Them Started...

...On the Wondrous Lifelong Journey of Astronomy.

"Astronomy has always been a

passion

of mine. Just as my eyes

lit up when I observed Saturn for the first time in a

telescope

,

I enjoy watching that same expression on the faces of others, knowing that I was a part of it."
~ Mark Brown, River Bend Astronomy Club

T

he silent universe above us has sparked awe, wonder, and curiosity since the dawn of human time. Even today, few sciences can compete with astronomy when it comes to igniting the sparks that lead to a lifelong interest in science.

But those sparks don't often jump directly from the sky. More often, they jump from person to person. The link might be an amateur astronomer giving kids their first look through a telescope. A sixth-grade teacher guiding students to discover for themselves how moon phases work. A scout leader pointing out the constellations. A NASA scientist visiting a Girls Club and sharing how she became fascinated by science as a youngster. The list is long--but it needs to be longer. The ASP is about assisting more people to make more sparks. Through our many nationwide astronomy education programs and academic publications, we help thousands of educators all across the country--classroom teachers, college faculty, research astronomers, "outreach" amateur astronomers, museum staff, and many more--to motivate their students to reach out and touch the stars. You can help. Your gift to the ASP enables us to maintain and expand the programs that "educate the educators" in astronomy and space science. Please consider making a gift to the ASP, for every donation makes a difference. Join us as we take even more people on the wondrous journey of astronomy.

Your gift to the ASP supports programs such as...
Project ASTRO - Family ASTRO National Network. Engaging students in science and astronomy with handson activities and thought-provoking discussion. This program reaches over 28,000 participants each year.

Night Sky Network. Operating in all fifty states and working with over 150 amateur astronomy clubs engaged in education and public outreach serving over 100,000 individuals each year.

"As marvelous as the stars is the mind of the person who studies them."
~ Martin Luther King, Jr.

The ASP is a national organization founded in 1889 that works to increase the public understanding and appreciation of astronomy. This is accomplished by: · Uniting the interests and expertise of scientists, educators, amateur astronomers and enthusiasts. · Providing resources and tools to assist educators. · Recognizing and honoring extraordinary contributions to astronomy and astronomy education. · Disseminating the results of astronomical research to the astronomical community. · Communicating the excitement of astronomy to educators and the general public.
