Apache Point Observatory

The Apache Point Observatory is privately owned and supported by the Astrophysical Research Consortium, whose mission is to operate the observatory to further astronomical research by the scientists and students of its member institutions. These institutions are the University of Chicago, Johns Hopkins University, New Mexico State University, the University of Virginia, the University of Washington, and the University of Colorado-Boulder. NMSU operates the observatory site for the Consortium.

The ARC Board of Governors welcome you to our celebration for the ARC 3.5-m Telescope anniversary. These Events are scheduled at Apache Point, as well as the National Solar Observatory Astronomy and Visitor's Center. Presentations on the telescope's History and Science are at the Visitor's Center, while the Dessert Reception/Star Party, Luncheon and tours are at Apache Point. Limited parking is available at both facilities; we encourage car-pooling from The Lodge. A non-scheduled shuttle service is available between the two facilities and for site parking. APO staff and volunteers are on hand to help with your questions or needs. Maps for both facilities are on the back page; courtesy bathrooms are marked. If you have an emergency, please contact any APO staff immediately. In case of inclement weather, please contact APO for schedule updates (575-437-6822). Lunch and Tours - Apache Point Observatory
12:00p - 2:00p Dine al fresco on a lite lunch; menu posted at entrance. Service is for two hours. Guided tours begin at 1:00p from 3 points: 3.5m Telescope, 2.5m Sloan Telescope, and the SDSS Plate Lab and advance to the next location every 15-min. Please register next to the tents to take your tour. Presentations are given at each location; groups are limited to 20 people. For safety purposes, the telescope stairs will be closed to foot traffic during tours.

Experience the night beauty of Apache Point at our Opening Reception and Star Party. You will view the skies through our 3.5m eyepiece, while enjoying sweet eats. Viewing begins at 7:15p for sunset and continues through 10:40p. For safety purposes, groups are limited to 16 and will have 35 minutes; the telescope stairs will be closed to foot traffic. Sign-up sheets for viewing are available at the event. Real-time APOLLO laser science begins at 11p.
