Echelle Installation: Day One; 11/09/98

Caption above photo

The day is COLD and WINDY (60+mph). Connie Rockosi, Larry Fiscelli, Jeff Sundwall and Shu-i Wang, along with Mark Klaene and Dave Woods start in on the long day.

The installation area is readied for the tank.

The tank is strapped to the 5-ton hoist (lowered from the observing level), slack is taken up, and hoisted to the observing level.

Shu-i wanted this shot so she could remember where the latches were hooked.

The tank is lowered to the mount and the gimbels are secured and adjusted.

Now the 70+mph winds pound on the building and driving the cold. The first snag occured when hex nuts for the adjustment rod (at the bottom of the tank) were missing.

After checking around Sunspot and much deliberation among the brain trust, Larry drives to Alamo (and has to drive back in a snow storm!)

After Larry's (safe) return, they install the nuts but the next snag occurs when the hoist runs into a problem. Mark and Dave wrestle with control!

The evening grew late and the crew retired until tomorrow morning.
