Elena Amato [OAArcetri]  (History of Science)

The Nobel stolen to women
Since 1901, 573 Nobel Prizes have been awarded to a total of 900 Laureates. Only 49 of these are women: 4.5 %. If we focus on Physics, out of 200 Nobel prize winners only 2 are women: 1 %. Is it particularly difficult for women to reach levels of excellence in Physics? In reality among the Physics laureates there should probably be at least 6-7 more Nobelwomen...

Mauro Focardi [Univ. Firenze]  (Exoplanets)

Towards a statistical description of planets and exoplanetary atmospheres: the ARIEL space mission
ARIEL (Atmospheric Remote-sensing Infrared Exoplanets Large-survey) has been proposed as a medium-class mission competing for the ESA M4 launch opportunity in the context of the 2015-2025 Cosmic Vision program. It has been conceived by an European Consortium as the first space mission to extensively perform remote-sensing on the atmospheres of a well defined set of warm and hot exoplanets.. ARIEL will observe a large number (~500) of gas giants, Neptunes and super-Earths around a variety of host stars exploiting transit spectroscopy in the 2-8 ÞÌm spectral range and broad-band optical photometry. Its Payload design is based on the successful study of the M3 EChO (Exoplanets Characterisation Observatory) mission with several simplifications and mass reductions.

The AstrobignÓ? concept

AstrobignÓ? is a series of short seminars that are held at the Osservatorio, with the goal of interconnecting the community of people working here, spreading new ideas and results, creating and reinforcing synergies between groups and indiduals. As such, Astrobigne's are meant to be accessible to a broad audience, including astronomers and technology staff, from senior researchers to students. Not by chance, the name "bignÓ?" was chosen to designate something delicious, attractive, quick to grasp and easy to "eat".

In practice, the astrobigne talks:

  • must be short (10 minutes plus 5 for open discussion, strict, 6-8 slides at most)
  • must present only 1-2 key points that people can assimilate quickly
  • should be aimed at triggering later discussions, collaboration, and future activities.
  • at this aim, can also present ongoing work with intermediate results
  • can cover a broad range of topics, including astronomy, technology, historic research, public outreach, organization etc...
  • will NEVER present a general overview of the subject and a complete account of the speaker's work
  • are given in English whenever possible (this is not because we don't love Italian, but we all understand that English is our professional language to be used to foster international collaborations. Not to mention that there usually are non-Italians in the audience).

Astrobigne's take place on Tuesdays, every two weeks in the main auditorium of OAArcetri (Aula A). We usually have three bigne'-talks (10+5minutes each), selected by the organizing committee in order to cover as many different areas of interest as possible. Before the talks, at 11:45, we normally meet in Aula A to socialize and eat real bigne's (pastries!). The talks start at noon approximately, but everybody is strongly advised to come by 11:45 so not to miss the... beginning of the talks!

The AstrobignÓ? Organizing Committee is currently composed of Sperello di Serego Alighieri (reference person for the extragalactic group), Fabrizio Massi (for the planets and star formation group, solar physics area), Enrico Pinna (for the technological area), and Antonella Gasperini (for the library, outreach and history), supported by our director Filippo Mannucci and by the invaluable help of Emanuela Masini with the "real" stuff. If you wish to give a presentation, first contact the relevant reference person and then fill in the doodle!

Elisabeta Lusso [OAArcetri]  (Extragalactic)

A universal physical relation for quasars
I will discuss our current knowledge of the relation between the soft X-ray and the optical/ultraviolet emission in AGN from an observational perspective. Such relation is of fundamental importance in understanding the structure of AGN accretion discs and their interplay with the mysterious X-ray corona.

Elena Masciadri [OAArcetri]  (Technology)

The ALTA project aims to set-up an automatic operational system for the forecast of the atmospherical parameters relevant for the ground-based astronomy and the optical turbulence to support AO observations at LBT. Commissioning is scheduled in June and December 2016.

Tuesday 15 March 2016 - 11:45 Aula A

Germano Sacco [OAArcetri]  (Galactic)

Structure and age of the young cluster NGC 2264 from the Gaia-ESO Survey
The mechanism leading to the formation of star clusters from the contraction and fragmentation of molecular clouds is the subject of much debate. One of the goal of the Gaia-ESO Survey is to analyse the spatial structure, the kinematics and the star formation history of star clusters younger than 10 Myr to address this debate. I will present some results from the analysis of the Gaia-ESO observations of the young cluster NGC2264, which show that we are able to reconstruct important details on the star formation process of this cluster and fulfill our original goal.

Linda Podio [OAArcetri]  (Astrochemistry)

The workshop on "Astronomical Complex Organic Molecules in different environments"
I will report on the first italian workshop on astrochemistry held at Palazzo Strozzi on 10 and 11 March 2016 and organized jointly by the Arcetri Observatory and the Scuola Normale Superiore of Pisa.

Sperello di Serego Alighieri [OAArcetri]  (Polarimetry)

The conventions for the polarization angle
The IAU/IEEE convention is that the polarization angle increases counter-clockwise, looking at the source. After WMAP the CMB polarimetrists use the opposite convention, causing problems and misunderstandings. Should we all stick to the same convention?

Tuesday 1st March 2016 - 11:45 Aula A

Vasaant Krishnan [OAArcetri]  (Star Formation)

Mapping the Milky Way with the Australian Long Baseline Array
For the first time, we have used the Australian Long Baseline Array (LBA) to measure the parallax distances to 6.7 GHz methanol masers in the Milky Way Galaxy. I will be discussing how these inaugural results from the only Southern hemisphere VLBI instrument are being incorporated into the Bar and Spiral Structure Legacy (BeSSeL) survey to map the Milky Way galaxy.

Rino Bandiera [OAArcetri]  (High energy)

Synchrotron emission with a partly random field & models of Radio Supernova Remnants
We present an extension of the classical synchrotron theory, for the combination of an ordered magnetic field plus a random component. Exact analytical formulae are obtained for a power-law distribution of particles. These results are then applied to model structure and polarization of the radio emission from shell-type Supernova Remnants.

Pietro Bolli [OAArcetri]  (Technology)

An Unmanned Aerial Vehicle-based system for the characterization/calibration of Low Frequency Aperture Arrays
I will give an overview of the technical characteristics of the Low Frequency Aperture Array (LFAA) of SKA. Then, I will describe the two Italian demonstrators, called Medicina and Sardinia Array Demonstrators, designed for testing new devices and concepts developed by INAF for a possible installation in SKA-LFAA. One of these systems is a custom hexacopter equipped with RF instrumentation able to characterize the antenna/array far-field pattern and to calibrate the array in the real operative environment.
