The Near Infrared Camera Spectrometer ( NICS) has been installed in the week 11-17 September 2000 at  the TNG Nasmyth A focus. The interface is meant to support the optical imager (OIG), the infrared camera and the adaptive optics module (ADOPT@TNG). NICS replace the ARcetri INfrared CAmera (ARNICA) temporarly installed at TNG.

This success could be achieved only with a lot of work and the collaboration of many people. We would thank all partecipants, and in particular the TNG technical and support staff and Arcetri and Tirgo joint tecnical staff.

NICS  is a DRO camera for infrared imaging and spectroscopy operating in wavelength  range between 0.9 and 2.6 microns and is equipped with an Hawaii 1024x1024 detector. In imaging mode the platescale can range from 0.25"/pixel to 0.04"/pixel (with Adopt@TNG) correspondig to a field of view ranging from 4.2'x4.2' to 0.7'x0.7'. In spectroscopy mode, various resolutions are available, ranging from the special Amici mode (50) by the normal grism mode (350-500) to the echelle mode (1200). Full details will be found on TNG Page.

M15
A K' image of M15 globular cluster. The true first sky image of Nics. Image taken on 17 September, 0.7" seeing, 0.25"/pixel platescale, 4.2'x4.2' field, 120 sec exposure time. It is evident the presence of some problems on qudrant 1 (lover right).

NGC2023
False color image of NGC 2023 reflection nebula. Image taken on 17 September, 0.7" seeing, 0.25"/pixel platescale, 4.2'x4.2' field. The image is composed from 3 frames taken in J (240 sec.), H2 (480 sec.) and K' (240 sec.).

False color image of
NGC1073
False color image of SBc spiral galaxy NGC 1073. Image taken on 17 September, 0.7" seeing, 0.25"/pixel platescale. The image is composed from 3 frames taken in J (240 sec.), H (240 sec.) and K' (240 sec.). The galaxy in infrared appare much smoother than in the POSS image.

Despite that success, a lot of work is still needed to reach a smooth and efficient science operations. We plan to end the present commisioning phase as soon as we can.
