Herbig-Haro flows from young intermediate and low-mass stars - Dr Bringfried Stecklum Colloquium

Herbig-Haro objects (HHOs) are compact shock-excited emission-line nebula which arise when outflows from young stars hit the ambient matter. The results to be presented are primarily based on an optical survey carried out with the Tautenburg Schmidt telescope. Numerous dark clouds were found to be associated with HHOs, indicating ongoing star formation. In a number of cases, the clouds were thought to be inactive because of the small CO line width. For several HHOs measurements of both the radial velocity and proper motion allowed conclusions on the orientation of the circumstellar disk from which the flow is launched. The parsec-scale flow and the jet from the Herbig Ae star MWC 480 will be described in more detail and implications for the duration of the accretion process will be drawn.
