ASA ActivitiesThe ASA has a variety of activities serving its members, the wider astronomical community and the general public. |

Information about the ASA and its activities may be found on the Society's pages (this site) rather than the more wide-ranging Australian Astronomy site. Information on ASA activities is generally distributed to the membership via the ASA email exploder. This exploder may be accessed for suitable purposes by emailing your message to John O'Byrne, the ASA Secretary maintaining the list.
The major activities of the ASA are:
- The ASA runs several meetings each year, including the Annual Scientific Meeting.
- The ASA sponsors a number of awards and grants and provides limited travel assistance to student members.
- The ASA's Education and Public Outreach Committee (EPOC) works to advance the level of public awareness of astronomy and promote the teaching of astronomy to students and the public. EPOC produces a series of Astronomy Factsheets on topical subjects such as and upcoming eclipses, transits etc. These are available from the Australian Astronomy web site. EPOC has has a also has a web page How to become an astronomer for school students.
- The ASA is concerned with obtrusive lighting ("light pollution") and has been asked by Standards Australia to compile a list of "designated" optical observatories worthy of protection from obtrusive lighting.
- The ASA, in conjunction with Annual Reviews Inc., offers a discount to members on subscriptions to Annual Review of Astronomy and Astrophysics.
- The Publications of the Astronomical Society of Australia (PASA) is a peer-reviewed journal, published on-line from Volume 18 (2002). Prior to Volume 12 (1995) it was known as the Proceedings of the ASA, however the name was changed to emphasise the fact that it is a refereed journal accepting submissions at any time.
- The Foundation for the Advancement of Astronomy (FAA) is a tax-deductible Foundation which exists to enhance the ASA's efforts to promote Astronomy and related fields in Australia, and to recognise and support excellence in those fields.
