Exploring and Viewing Catalogs & Data Cubes

A) Catalogs

  1. Published Catalogs in CDS/vizier - NOTE: ideally, catalogued sources are cross-connected to multi-wavelength images, spectra, cubes, etc.
  2. (a) type *HIPASS* in the second field or go to HIPASS catalogs in CDS/vizier

  3. (a) choose the `HIPASS Bright Galaxy Catalog' (HIPASS BGC) * QUERY+VO

  4. (a) execute a query, then plot the results with the VOPlot utility (scroll to bottom left of page), select columns (etc.) to display any properties

  5. VOPlot Help (NOTE: the "Standalone Version" is required for loading VOTables not in CDS/vizier and for Loading Multiple VOTables)
  6. Local examples - not yet in VOTable format - include:

  7. NOTE: SkyView allows to overlay CDS/vizier, HEASARC, NED and other VOTables onto images resulting from any query.
  8. Desirable: viewing catalogs in multi dimensions using, e.g., S2Plot, Topcat, ..., and producing publishable output files
  9. Install: VOPlot, S2Plot, SkyView-in-a-Jar, ...

  10. ... is this the way to go ? ... any better ideas/plans ?


B) Data: cubes & spectra

  1. KARMA (e.g. kvis, kpvslice, ...) - great, but not able to handle very large cubes
  2. Spectra in NED

  3. SkyView (NOTE: HIPASS cubes have been uploaded to SkyView and will soon be fully available under 3-D Image Surveys)

  4. SkyView - Standalone

  5. at ATNF


C) Roaming Large Surveys

  1. WikiSky (DSS, SDSS, GALEX, ...) or GoogleSky (aim to import HIPASS moments maps !)

  2. Great example: MIPSGAL (Google Map)

  3. To do: make my own layer in GoogleSky (might need wcs2kml and/or NRAO kml)

  4. etc.


D) WALLABY

  1. like HIPASS, but much bigger and much better :)

  2. Wallaby HI catalog (approx. 500,000 sources = 1000 x HIPASS catalog)

  3. Wallaby - single HI cube (16384 channels x 2000 pixels x 2000 pixels = 1600 x single HIPASS cube)
