Being the head of the USSR Academy of Sciences for fourteen years, Keldysh played a leading role in setting up large teams of scientists and designers, in coordinating work on the projects of great strategic importance for the nation.

Luna-9: 50 years of the first soft landing on the lunar surface

Exactly half a centuary ago, on February 3, 1966 for the first time in the history of space exploration a soft landing on the lunar surface was carried out. Soviet automatic lunar station (ALS) Luna-9 landed west of the Reiner and Marius craters in the Ocean of Storms, opening a new stage in the development of cosmonautics.
