At 7 hours: 24 minutes Moscow Time, descent module of Soyuz TMA-17 space vehicle returned to Earth. All DM deorbiting, search and landing operations were performed in a normal mode.

Russian cosmonaut Oleg Kotov (Commander of Soyuz TMA-17 space vehicle), NASA astronaut Timothy Creamer and Japan Space Agency astronaut Soichi Noguchi have completed flight to the International Space Station (ISS) under ISS-23 Program.

Crew members of the twenty fourth Prime Crew of the International Space Station (ISS-24) continue their work onboard the station. The crew consists of the following persons: Russian cosmonauts Alexander Skvortsov (Crew Commander) and Mukhail Korniyenko, NASA astronaut Tracy Coldwell-Dison.

Operations for Soyuz TMA-17 deorbiting and return-to-Earth maneuvers, search of the landed SM and evacuation of the crew from DM were performed in Moscow Mission Control Center (MCC-M) under control of the State Committee (with A.N. Perminov, the Head of Federal Space Agency as the Chairman) and the Technical Management in charge of flight tests of manned space complexes (with V.A. Lopota, General Designer, RSC Energia President as the Manager).

In the return-to-Earth phase, Soyuz TMA-17 flight was under control of the Lead Operational Control Team (with V.A. Solovyov, the First Deputy General Designer of RSC Energia as the Flight Director) working in MCC-M in coordination with the specialists in aviation-space search and rescue; other Russian organizations and services, as well as the US Mission Control Center in Houston.

The final operations of the space vehicle deorbiting and its DM ground landing were witnessed at MCC-M by the representatives of FSA, NASA, Japan Space Agency (JAXA), ESA, the Russian enterprises and organizations involved in implementation of the ISS Program.

Upon completion of the crew evacuation from DM, press-conference was held at MCC-M for Russian and foreign specialists. The press-conference was attended by the managers and representatives of Roscosmos, RSC Energia, foreign space agencies, the leading enterprises of Russian rocket and space industry.

 

For reference:

  1. Soyuz TMA-17 DM performed soft landing in the preset area, to the south-east of the town of Dzhezkazgan, Republic of Kazakhstan. This landing area was chosen as agreed upon with Kazakh Party, with due regard for sowing activities in the northern areas of the Republic.
  2. In order to ensure safety during landing of the manned space vehicle descent module, three planes AN-12 and AN-24, 12 helicopters Mi-8, six search - evacuation vehicles were involved; in so doing, all design landing points were covered by search during both controlled and ballistic descent.
  3. Space flight duration with Oleg Kotov, Timothy Greamer and Soichi Noguchi onboard was about 164 days.
