DATA AND PLACE OF BIRTH:
October 9, 1957, Donetsk, Rostov Area.
EDUCATION:
In 1985 he graduated from Moscow Aviation Institute after
S. Ordzhonikidze (MAI), faculty of Cosmonautics and Automatic
Spacecraft in specialty of Two-Media Spacecraft and got
qualification of a mechanical engineer.
FAMILY STATUS:
Married, has a daughter.
Wife: Vera Sergeevna Usacheva, born in 1961, engineer at
S.P. Korolev RSC Energia.
Daughter: Evgenia Yourievna Usacheva, born in 1988, schoolgirl.
AWARDS AND RANKS:
By Decree of the President of the Russian Federation dated
August 18, 1994 # 1698 Yu.V. Usachev was given a title of
a Hero of the Russian Federation for bravery and heroism
exhibited during a long-duration space flight to Mir Space
Station.
WORK EXPERIENCE:
In 1985 he signed on at S.P. Korolev RSC Energia as an engineer.
He was engaged at spacecraft egonomics with respect to robotic
systems.
In 1989 he was enlisted to the cosmonaut team of S.P. Korolev
NPO Energia as a candidate to testing cosmonauts, and following
the general space training at Yu.A. Gagarin Cosmonaut Training
Center in 1991 he was given a qualification of a testing
cosmonaut.
In 1992 - 1993 he passed a training as a flight engineer
of the backup crew of PC-13, PC-14.
In 1994 he performed a 182-day space flight as a flight
engineer of the Soyuz TM-18 and Mir Space Station under
PC-15 program together with V. Afanasiev and V. Polyakov.
In 1995 he passed a training as a member of the backup crew
of PC-19 for flying to the Mir Space Station.
In 1996 he performed a 194-day space flight as a flight
engineer of the Soyuz TM-23 and Mir Space Station under
21st prime crew program together with Yu. Onufrienko.
Since 1996 he has been an instructor/testing cosmonaut.
On 25 July 1997 Usachev was appointed a commander of the
ISS-2 prime crew.
In May 2000 he performed a 10-day space flight aboard the
Space Shuttle Atlantis under STS-101.
