LSO-S experiment is a part of the science research program to be performed aboard the ISS RS by Pedro Duque, ESA astronaut of Spanish nationality in the frame of the SERVANTES Project and continued LSO-B experiment performed under the ODISSEA Project. The European Space Agency is a customer for the preparation and implementation of the scientific program.

PURPOSE:

Study of optical radiation in the atmosphere and ionosphere of Earth related to the thunder activity and seismic processes.

OBJECTIVES:

• Measurement of spatial and spectral distribution of "sprites" (optical glows in the upper atmosphere and ionosphere) and comparison of this data with lightning radiation intensity
• Statistic study of the sprites frequency and their origin based on observations of long duration (tens of hours long).

EXPERIMENT RESULTS:

Science information recorded on a removable hard disc to be returned to the ground.
