EVN Symposium 2016
20-23 September 2016, St.Petersburg, Russia

St.Petersburg, Russia

The 13th European VLBI Network Symposium and Users Meeting will be held in Saint Petersburg ? the second largest city in Russia and one of the most beautiful cities in the world. It was founded in 1703 by Tsar Peter the Great on the swampy land at the mouth of the Neva River. Being Russia?s political and cultural centre for 200 years, St.Petersburg is sometimes referred to in Russia as the Northern Capital. The city is often called the Venice of the North because there are 65 rivers and canals with artistically decorated cast iron bridges. St.Petersburg is a major industrial, cultural and scientific centre of Russia and an important port on the Baltic Sea.

The city's unique history is reflected in its 18th-19th century avenues, palaces and parks. The streets of the Northern capital are a wonderful combination of different architectural styles. Majestic palaces, cathedrals, churches and other buildings were built by famous European and Russian architects. The islands, rivers, canals and bridges make it especially charming. In June and July during the White Nights a great number of people come to the embankments of the Neva River to enjoy a spectacular view of the bridges being drawn to let the sea ships through. The Historic Centre of Saint Petersburg and Related Groups of Monuments constitute a UNESCO World Heritage Site. There are a great number of theatres, operas and more than 200 museums in Saint Petersburg. The largest one is the Hermitage Museum which contains the richest collection of pictures and pieces of applied art in the world. Saint Petersburg inspired many of great poets, writers, painters, sculptors, composers and actors. Much of the life and work of Pushkin, Dostoevsky and Tchaikovsky was connected with the city.
