INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE "Asteroid-Comet Hazard ­ 2009"

The Russian Academy o f Sciences, the Russian Foundat ion for Basic Research, Saint Petersburg Scient ific Center of RAS, the Inst itute of Applied Astronomy o f RAS invite you to participate in the International scient ific conference «Asteroid-Co met Hazard-2009» which will be held 21-25 September 2009 in St. Petersburg. The purposes of the conference are to provide a commo n forum for experts of diverse background and disciplines to come and exchange informat ion and ideas, to recommend subsequent development of research, to attract public attention to severe hazard due to asteroids and co mets approaching the Earth and necessit y of more act ive international cooperation o f the research directed to protection of civilizat ion fro m this hazard.

Topics to be discussed
It is supposed to discuss the next topics: 1. Study of small bodies of the So lar system (phys ics, dynamics, origin and evo lution o f asteroids, comets, meteoroids). 2. Asteroid-co met hazard (origin and dynamic evo lution of objects approaching the Earth), observat ions, physical properties, cataloguing, data bases, estimat ion of co llis io n probabilit y wit h the Earth and other bodies). 3. Collisio ns of cosmic bodies wit h the Earth (study o f the traces of past catastrophes, modeling of co llis io ns and their consequences, the thresho ld for global catastrophe). 4. Counteraction (discovering hazardous cosmic objects, methods and means o f act ing upon near-Earth objects, organizat ion o f passive and active counteracting the asteroid and comet impacts, the techno logies to address the study o f asteroids and co mets in nearEarth space, missio ns to hazardous bodies). 5. International-legal aspects of counteracting the impact hazard. Collaboration of different countries in solving the problem. Dealing wit h mass-media.

Format of the Conference
Languages of the conference are English and Russian. Abstracts of papers, in case they are written in Russian, should have detailed summary in English. Contributed paper can be submitted for oral presentation or as poster. Depending upon the number of papers offered, it is hoped to provide 30 minutes for invited papers and 15 minutes for contributed ones, including discussion. For oral presentation a mult imedia projector will be in your disposit io n. Area up to 0.6 square meter will be provided for poster (9 pages of A4 format). Submitted papers are reviewed by the Program Committee and selected on the basis of their suitabilit y for inclusio n in the program. The Co mmittee reserves the right to reject paper or to change form o f its presentation. Papers will not be accepted for reading "in absent ia". It is supposed that Proceedings o f the Conference will be published soon after the end o f the Conference.


Abstracts of papers must be submitted by May 15, 2009 in electronic form.

Registration fee
The registration fee is 3000 Rubles (approximately 120 USD or 85 EURO) for participants and 1500 Rubles for acco mpanying persons. It should be paid in cash while registration. Registration fee does not include travel expenses, accommodation and other expenses o f the participant.

Accommodation
Participants of the conference will be accommo dated in the hotels o f St. Petersburg. Detailed informat ion about prices in the hotels will appear in the second announcement.

Cultural program
The conference will be hosted by the Inst itute of Applied Astronomy. Building o f the Inst itute is situated close to historical center of St. Petersburg. St. Petersburg is one o f the mo st beaut iful cit ies of the world, which celebrated threehundredth anniversary. Numerous architectural ensembles o f the cit y and its suburbs, bridges and embankments of Neva river and canals form inimitable in its beauty appearance o f the cit y. World-wide known museums, first of all, Hermitage and Russian museum, possess unique collect ions of works of art and world masterpieces. There are dozens theatres in St. Petersburg, including Mariinsky theatre of opera and ballet. Participants of the conference will have opportunit y to attend museums and theatres, to have excursio ns to palace ensembles in St. Petersburg suburbs.
