Worked Example 02

Worked Example 02

The Question

(from the 2005 exam)

A curve of radius R is banked at an angle of θ to the horizontal. A car of mass M negotiates the curve at a speed v without skidding.

  1. Draw a free-body diagram appropriate to this situation (2 marks)
  2. Determine in terms of R, θ, g, M and v, the normal force on the tires exerted by the road (3 marks)
  3. Show that your expression is correct by considering the cases for θ=0° and θ=90° (1 mark)
  4. Determine the frictional force exerted by the road on the tires of the car. (3 marks)
  5. Determine the minimum coefficient of static friction between the road and tires. (3 marks)
