"Present-day Geo-Ecology: Problems and Solutions"

September 6-19, 2004

(12 working days, 70 academic hours)

The International School programme, supervised by the Director of Italian-Russian Institute for Ecological Education and Research, Head of the Laboratory of Geological Environment Protection, Professor V.I.Sergeev, focused on the main aspects of the environment protection. Methods of assessing and monitoring soil, ground, surface and underground water pollution and geo-ecological problems of large cities were considered. Forecasting pollutants diffusion in different media and methods of pollution prevention were discussed.

During the second week, the International School participants went on the excursion "Hydrological objects - water supply sources for Moscow" and visited the Rublevo dam, the Moscow River at Zvenigorod, the Mozhaisk hydropower station, the Ozerna reservoir, the Khimky reservoir and the Moscow Canal.

Faculty of Fundamental Medicine

International Summer School "Space Biology and Medicine"

June 28 - July 11, 2004

(14 days, 40 academic hours of study + 16 academic hours of educational visits)

The Faculty of Fundamental Medicine of Lomonosov Moscow State University, the Institute of Biomedical Problems of Russian Academy of Sciences, and Modern Educational Programmes Company held an International Summer School "Space Biology and Medicine".

The course considered the problems of vital functions of a person in space. It was for the first time that the basics of this subject were introduced to medical senior students and postgraduates. Biologists and medical doctors from Russia and abroad came to take part in the Summer School. It was based on the unique observations obtained during 40 years of Soviet and Russian space programmes development. The course showed how the achievements of space medicine could be used in general clinical practice. All lectures and workshops were conducted in English.

Workshops were conducted at the Institute for Biomedical Problems, the State Scientific Centre of Russian Federation. The course included demonstration of medical provision of "Vostok", "Voskhod", "Soyuz" spaceships and "Salyut" and "Mir" space stations. During lectures and workshops students had the opportunity to compare basic biomedical results obtained in the course of Russian and American space projects. A considerable part of the course was devoted to new technologies which are used at the Russian segment of the International space station.

Faculty of Journalism

Moscow Summer School in Journalism and Communication "Media and Convergence"

(15 days, 60 hours of lectures, 30 hours of individual consultations)

The objective of the MSSJC was to promote foreign expertise and experience in journalism and communication studies among Russian media scholars and lecturers, to update and improve mass media studies and communication theories in Russia, to deeper integrate Russian research into the general framework of media studies.

The MSSJC brought together leading Russian and foreign professors in journalism and communication in order to provide Russian media scholars and lecturers with plurality of media and communication theories existing today in Russia and abroad. Working languages of the MSSJC was English (for visiting professors? courses) and Russian (for Russian professors? courses).

MSSJC participants included researchers and lecturers from the Faculty of Journalism, Moscow State University and Departments of Journalism from other Russian Universities. Basic formats of the Moscow Summer School in Journalism and Communication were lectures on up-to-date topics and workshops focusing upon specific issues of the selected topics.

The lectures and seminars focused on the following issues:

• New markets, new media products, new journalistic skills
• Content as a journalistic product
• Journalist as a content provider; journalist as an information navigator
• Future of the printed media in the age of digital interactive networks
• Innovations in the sphere of online journalism; new functions and new professional criteria
• Multimedia journalist: skills and expertise
