Polarization signatures of clusters
in the microwave background
Anthony Challinor
University of Cambridge, U.K.
Galaxy clusters along the line of sight leave an imprint in the po-
larization of the cosmic microwave background radiation (CMB).
We investigate several mechanisms for the generation or geomet-
ric distortion of CMB polarization by interaction with clusters:
(i) Compton scattering, where we take full account of the e ects
of relativistic electron velocity dispersion on the frequency spec-
trum of the generated polarization; (ii) Gravitational lensing and
evolving potential e ects, which lead to geometric distortion of the
pattern of cosmological polarization on the sky. We also discuss
the prospects of detecting such e ects, and outline some possibili-
ties for using cluster polarization as a probe of cluster physics and
cosmology.
