Polarization signatures of clusters
in the microwave background

Galaxy clusters along the line of sight leave an imprint in the po-
larization of the cosmic microwave background radiation (CMB).
We investigate several mechanisms for the generation or geomet-
ric distortion of CMB polarization by interaction with clusters:
(i) Compton scattering, where we take full account of the eects
of relativistic electron velocity dispersion on the frequency spec-
trum of the generated polarization; (ii) Gravitational lensing and
evolving potential eects, which lead to geometric distortion of the
pattern of cosmological polarization on the sky. We also discuss
the prospects of detecting such eects, and outline some possibili-
ties for using cluster polarization as a probe of cluster physics and
cosmology.
