Instability Induced Turbulence

The big radio lobes (=cocoon) produced by jets often contain optical emission (narrow lines and continuum) aligned with the radio jets. The implication is jet induced star formation and the coexistance of quite normal gas (100/ccm, 10,000 K) coexists with the exotic jet plasma (1/100,000 /ccm, trio. K). There's also evidence for X-ray gas (1/10 /ccm, mio. K). In this project, I will investigate the possibility that X-ray gas is entrained into the cocoon and cooled down to produce the observed effects. The Flash code is used for the simulations. The page is likely to expand as results become available. Below is a simulation of the Kelvin Helmholtz instability, which is relevant to the physics in this project. The images are zoomed clockwise. Ten refinement levels were used. The grid may not show up correctly on some displays.
