Windows Distribution

TexnicCentre

TexnicCentre is possibly the most user friendly IDE for the creation of Latex documents. It can be downloaded from

http://www.texniccenter.org/

Unix/Linux Distribution

Gedit

Gedit is a standard text editor, and comes with good syntax highlighting for Latex documents

Compiler

Almost certainly included, a command like latex file.tex or pdflatex file.tex should work
