Information Re: Arecibo Proposals for the March 3, 2016 Deadline

Information Re: Arecibo Proposals for the March 3, 2016 Deadline

Arecibo proposals submitted for the March 3, 2016 (17 AST, 21 UTC), deadline are for telescope usage during the six-month (or in some cases one-year) period beginning July 1, 2016.

  1. Proposals should be prepared under the procedures detailed in Procedures for Proposal Disposition and Telescope Scheduling.
  2. The Arecibo PUPPI (Puerto Rico Ultimate Pulsar Processing Instrument) pulsar backend is now integrated into the Arecibo observing software, CIMA, and is available to all users.
  3. The 2 x 7, dual-polarization, 300-MHz bandwidth, "Mock" spectrometers are available to all ALFA users. For details see Mock Spectrometers for ALFA users.
  4. A SINGLE-PIXEL MODE for the Mock spectrometers is available. This can provide up to 1 GHz of contiguous spectral coverage. On-line pulsar folding is not yet supported. For use of the Mock spectrometers with a single-pixel receiver, see Specifics for Mock Single-Pixel mode .
  5. The WAPP spectrometer provides an 8-band, dual-polarization, single-pixel observing capability for spectral lines or pulsars. This device can be used to place 8 independent bands over a 1-GHz range, each band having up to 100-MHz bandwidth. A contiguous 680-MHz spectral coverage can be obtained after allowing for filter roll-off. For an overview of WAPP capabilities, see WAPP spectrometer information.
  6. We plan on commissioning the new 4-8 GHz C-band receiver in the near future. This will replace the 6-8 GHz C-high and eventually also the current 4-6 GHz C-band receivers.
  7. Arecibo telescope deadlines are moving to the first Thursday of the month to avoid them frequently falling after the weekend or the Labor Day long weekend.
  8. For this deadline, C-graded proposals will be considered as possible filler projects rather than being automatically rejected.
  9. PUPPI users should include, as part of their data management plan, details of how they will ensure their data is removed from the PUPPI drives in a timely manner.
  10. We are not accepting proposals for the use of the HF Facility for ionospheric modification at this deadline. We anticipate calling for proposals for this use at the September deadline.
