Position in Astronomy
The National
Astronomy and Ionosphere Center/Arecibo Observatory is seeking a
programmer for the astronomy (radio and radar) program. Under general
supervision, develop, maintain, and document spectral line data
reduction and analysis software for astronomical research at the
Arecibo Observatory. Initially, this will involve the consolidation of
existing software at Arecibo which
is mostly written in IDL, the Interactive Data Language. The Astronomy
programmer will work towards a standardized user interface to all
Arecibo data reduction routines, and use initiative to incorporate
scripts and algorithms contributed by visiting scientists, and by staff
scientists and engineers. The programmer will also search and include
appropriate routines found at other facilities, and modify them as
required for compatibility with Arecibo. The Astronomy Programmer is
expected to participate in the planning for future development, and to
provide other software support as directed.
Requirements:
BS degree and 2 to 3 years experience in physics, engineering, or
computer science, or equivalent combination. Excellent programming
skills with experience in the design and implementation of user
interfaces. Knowledge of C and Tcl/Tk, and IDL. Preferred
qualifications include: experience with radio astronomy data reduction.
Familiarity with one or more Astronomy data reduction software packages
such as AIPS++, CLASS, IRAF, AIPS, or XS. Familiarity with data
manipulation environments, in addition to IDL, such as PerlDL, or
matLab.
The National
Astronomy and Ionosphere Center/Arecibo Observatory is operated by
Cornell University under a cooperative agreement with the U.S. National
Science Foundation. The 305 m telescope is used for radio and radar
astronomical studies and investigations of the Earth's ionosphere.
