The European Union

On 2004 May 1, ten new countries joined the European Union: Malta, Cyprus, Poland, Hungary, the Czech Republic, Slovakia, Slovenia, Lithuania, Latvia and Estonia. In 2007 January 1, Romania and Bulgaria also joined. Significantly, the last ten countries were, during the Cold War, under Communist rule, and six were part of countries that collapsed after those dictatorships ended: Slovenia was part of Yugoslavia, the Czech Republic and Slovakia were part of Czechoslovakia and Lithuania, Latvia and Estonia were part of the Soviet Union itself.

With the entry of these new countries in the European Union, the division of Europe that arose with Wold War II and was maintained with the Cold War is finally over. And that deserves a celebration!

A total of 27 European countries had decided to join the European Union at the end of 2007.
