S2 SHIPPING and DELIVERING

1.) What's different about these tape, or what's the difference between regular and S2 video tapes?

They will only be using certain types of tapes which are high quality to minimize errors introduced due to tape flaws. The tapes they use are Maxell or Ampex Super VHS (S-VHS) tapes only. They will ship us everything we need in terms of tapes for recording purposes, and they will most likely have a buffer of tapes at our site to accomodate for late shipments etc...

2.) Do they have a barcode on them? If they do, do we have to keep track of the tape?

All of their tapes are labelled individually, and in sets of 8. A set of 8 tapes has it's own 'sleeve' in which all tapes from that set are kept, and there is a write-on label on this sleeve which the (telescope operator?) for a given experiment will fill in the relevant data for the experiment. The log file for an experiment should note the tape id used. The tape id's will have the format:

CA-3-#####cc Where ##### is a five digit numerical index and 'cc' is a two digit hexadecimal checksum.

They take care of all tape tracking in a grander sense, but of course, at our end we will have to make sure that sets are kept together and know which experiment is recorded on which tape set.
3.) Do we receive tapes on request or do we just get the tapes needed for the experiments.

For the purposes of the VSOP mission, They will get a schedule from Japan and will determine who needs tapes, how many tapes we need and when to ship them, so we won't have to worry about requesting tapes from them, unless we forsee a shortage and/or problems, we can drop them an email at.
