VLBI at AO.

VLBI Observations with the 305-m telescope

At present (April 2000) the only VLBI recorder at the Arecibo Observatory is an "S2 System", on loan to NAIC from the Space Geodynamics Laboratory (SGL) of the Institute for Space and Terrestrial Science (ISTS), toronto, Canada. We have taken part in several VSOP (using the Japanese in-orbit Radio Telescope, HALCA) observation in the last two (post upgrade) years.

In addition, we are now especting the delivery of a VLBA4 system in the summer of 2000, which will enable us to join in many ground-based VLBI observations.

S2 System (1) Search for Neutral hydrogen in the host galaxies of AGNs at different redshifts.
(2) Physical nature and spatial distribution of the ionized component of the interstellar matter.
(3) Physics of compact extragalactic radio sources.

I am (still) the local coordinator for the Sprectrum Management and RFI protection Group (SMARG) at the observatory. I am also a member of the VLBI group and (jointly with Chris Salter) running the on-going S2-based VSOP observations.
